Amazing Purchases at Book Auctions
Do you have any rare books you’d purchase without a second thought? What is the highest price you’d pay? Collectible volumes and antique titles come with expensive initial prices that rise higher and higher with each bid. Explore the following old volumes and their final selling price:
- “The Magna Carta”
- “The Birds of America”
- “Cosmographia”
- “The Book of Mormon”
- “The St. Cuthbert Gospel”
“The Magna Carta”
Although “The Magna Carta” doesn’t technically qualify as a book, the manuscript provided a rudimentary blueprint for modern legal systems. Dating all the way back to the 13th century, the writing dictated how an old English King could establish law and order among the common folk over which he ruled.
Its rich history and lasting influence put it among the most expensive writings in the world. It sold for $21,321,000 in 2007.
“The Birds of America”
“The Birds of America” has historical, artistic, and literary importance. This dynamic book contains information about over 1,000 North American bird species. Only 15 copies are available worldwide.
It features rich illustrations in the classical Audubon style. The text truly demonstrates the artistic skill of the artists. No wonder it sold for $9,500,000 in 2018!
“Cosmographia”
Originally published in 1477, “Cosmographia” is considered the first atlas in the world. When book auctions feature texts with such historical significance, they will sell the manuscripts at an awesomely high final price. Since “Cosmographia” paved the way for modern atlases and mapping, it sold for $4 million in 2006.
“The Book of Mormon”
A long-lived history of controversy surrounds “The Book of Mormon” and its following. It is a fascinating cornerstone where American history and its relationship with religion intersect. So when the original draft of this religious text went up for auction, it promised to earn lots of money.
Not only did it turn a profit, but it also went down as the most expensive antique book ever sold. A private buyer purchased it for $35 million in 2018.
“St. Cuthbert Gospel”
You’re probably familiar with pocket Bibles or Bible apps for mobile devices. These items keep the Biblical text within reach at all times. But this tradition began as early as the seventh century with the “St. Cuthbert Gospel.”
This Latin volume was the original pocket Bible. Unlike other religious texts of the time, it doesn’t possess the same lavish illustrations and takes a more minimal approach. It sold for $14,300,000 in 2012.
