Saturday, October 29th, 2022
Many things can qualify as collectibles – from coins and stamps to figurines and exclusive memorabilia. Collectors usually pay incredibly high prices for rare versions of otherwise common items. Here’s a look at some items sold for high prices at collectible auctions.
Dunes Casino Red and Blue Decks
The demolition of the Las Vegas-based Dunes hotel and casino happened in 1993. However, some of the establishment’s cards still exist. A set of two decks fetched $2,500 at an auction in 2018, translating to $1,250 per deck.
1953 Superman Lunchbox
This lunchbox was manufactured in 1953 when George Reeves played Superman on TV. Five decades later, One of the lunchboxes, in superb condition, sold for more than $13,000. The passage of time typically increases value, so today, this lunchbox might fetch even more.
Beauty and the Beast VHS Tape
Some collectors still look for VHS tapes decades after DVD and Blu-ray technologies drove them out of the market. Beauty and the Beast is perhaps the most valuable VHS tape – a pair of them fetched $9,000 on eBay in 2018. However, those looking for quick cash may artificially create the buzz around these items, and many sell for much less impressive amounts.
1933 Zippo Lighter
Zippo is among the most popular brands globally, producing over 600 million lighters since its inception in 1933. In 2008, the company sold one of its original lighters for $37,000 for its 75th anniversary. Another 1933 classic sold for $18,000 on eBay.
Original 1959 Barbie Doll
According to Mental Floss, a 1959 original Barbie doll in excellent condition once fetched $27,450. Collectors have paid hundreds of thousands of dollars at collectible auctions for special-edition Barbie dolls with authentic diamond jewelry.
Walt Disney Pins

- Super Jumbo Trader’s Dream Pin: $650
- Nightmare Before Christmas Pin: $699.33

Pez Dispensers
Pez dispensers have been around for nearly a century. The original versions of the 1930s resembled a metal lighter. Today, the brand has produced hundreds of unique dispensers with thousands of variations.
These tiny plastic boxes can be worth a fortune, and the 1982 World’s Fair Edition is perhaps the most valuable Pez dispenser. The brand produced only two dispensers for the 1982 World’s Fair, one of which sold for at least $32,000 in 2006.
