5 Tips For Transporting Used Farm Equipment After An Auction
Thursday, July 23rd, 2020
It is exciting to find a great deal on used farm equipment at auction. This is especially true if the equipment is in great condition and you didn’t go over budget. Before you even go to an auction, though, you should think about how you will transport your wins.
1. Check the manual
This is the first place you should look for information about moving farm equipment. If you don’t have one for the machine you are buying, look online. There are many resources available to help you. You can expect to see instructions about removing all batteries, tightening loose parts, or draining fluids.
2. See if you need any permits (and then get them)
Once you have won an auction for used farm equipment, you will need to place the machinery on a trailer to get it home. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has regulations about transporting heavy machinery.
Oversized or overweight cargo requires certain permits in different areas. Also, you may not be able to take farm equipment on certain roads or bridges, which will alter your route back home.
3. Keep the farm equipment covered
Whether you are traveling in winter, fall, spring, or summer, you will need to cover any farm equipment you win at auction. Rain, wind, snow, hail, and even extreme heat can all cause different issues with exposed parts of the equipment. You don’t want it to get damaged before you have even had a chance to use it.
4. Be prepared to move equipment before you go to the auction
When you go to a used farm equipment auction, you aren’t guaranteed to win. But, you still need to be prepared to move any machines you are interested in bidding on. This means knowing the requirements of pick up and transport before you go. You must also have the right kind of vehicle and trailer to make the move easier.
5. Know the rules of the auction house
It is vital that you understand the rules of each specific auction house you visit. This includes when and where you can pick up your equipment after you have won. Be sure to also know when and how to pay, what their hours of operation are, and any special loading or unloading procedures they may have.
